Gelfoam helps form a bulky artificial clot in vascular areas, as mentioned previously. It is usually wetted with thrombin or isotonic saline to allow pliability (saline) or greater clot formation (thrombin). It can be left in the surgical site and will be absorbed in 4 to 6 weeks.
